  • 01.12.2010 - We have lost one of the trailblazers of European rogaining. Andres Käär has passed away. Andres was the course-setter and the mapper of the first TAOK rogaines in Estonia. He developed the rogaining mapping style that is currently in use in several European countries. He was the key person behind the 2005 European Rogaining Championships held in Nõva, Estonia. The 2005 European Champs were a key event in many respects as these pulled into 24-hour rogaining several Estonian and Latvian teams. For these achievements, Andres was awarded in 2005 the Geoduck Award, being the only European rogainer who has received this award. Andres was also the first Estonian observer to the IRF and later a member of the Council. We are grateful for his contributions to rogaining. - Lauri Leppik

Trevor’s full interview is available here along with routes, photographs and results.
“PHIL WHITTEN’s two teams collected a combined score of 2,440 points. Phil, Joel Mackay and Jonathan Worswick returned to the HH at 4pm after Joel badly rolled his foot near #53...
ALEXA McAULEY and Gill Fowler have been highly competitive for a few years, notably winning the Joadja 12-hour and an equal-second at Lake Macquarie... they’re in good form... We wish them speed and strength in the World Champs in New Zealand next month (20-21 Nov.).
MIKE HOTCHKIS was the course setter for the High’n Dry rogaine. He also set the 2006 World Champs in the Warrumbungles, has many NSW and Australian championship wins to his credit and has a long involvement with, and commitment to, the NSWRA Committee. Mike won last year’s NSW Champs at Mt Werong, teamed with Jonathan Worswick.
MARTIN LEFMANN and Pete Thomas won the 15-hour event, utilising all but two minutes of their available time...
JASON TSUI and Paul Barton finished 6th in the 15-hour with 890 points. Thanks to his GPS monitor we know that Jason walked for 8½ hours, climbed 1,628m over 39.23km, consuming 3,392 calories, and his average heart rate was 101bpm.”

  • 04.10.2010 - 11th TAOK rogaine was held on Saturday, 2 October in a picturesque area of South Estonia, featuring the primeval valley of the Ahja River with Devonian sand-stone cliffs surrounded by areas of open pine forests and a few wetlands. The 8-hour TAOK rogain retains the title of the most populous rogaining event in the world. This year, the event gathered over 950 participants in 380 teams. Besides the local Estonian teams there were several teams from Latvia and Russia, with Finland, Ukraine, USA, Canada and Czech Republic also represented.
Brothers Silver and Rain Eensaar, silver medalists at the 2009 European Rogaining Championships, showed their high speed and good route-planning skills, clearing the map in 7,5 hours with a beeline distance of over 52 kilometers.

  • 18.08.2010 - European Rogaining Championships were successfully held on the weekend of 14-15 August in Ukraine. The race was held in a beautiful foothill area of the Eastern Carpathian mountains at elevations from 450 to 900 meters. The hash house was set up at Migovo ski and tourist resort. The event gathered 265 participants (123 teams) from nine European countries: Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Czech Republic, Belorus, Denmark and France.
Hannu Oja and Seppo Mäkinen from Finland are the new European Rogaining Vhampions, upgrading from the bronze medal that they won last year at the ERC in Ylläs.
Miroslav Seidl and Petr Boranek from the Czech Republic, who have previously twice won the title of European Champions, added silver medals to their collection. Russian mixed team Natalya Abramova and Andrey Shvedov showed the third overall result, winning the XO category. Full results at: bukovinaorient.org.ua.
The race was challenging with daytime temperatures over 30C. The total climb for top teams reached over five kilometers! Fortunately, there were many streams for natural, clean drinking water. The organisers, under the leadership of Efim Shtempler and Victor Skripnik, put in a lot of effort to secure a good quality event. The map was of good quality with well-chosen control features to provide a good mix terrain and allowing great vistas from hilltops. The event website is erc2010.in.ua

  • 01.12.2009 - The Moonshine24 is the 2010 New Zealand Rogaining Championship, to be held on 17 & 18 April 2010, in the Akatarawas. Although this area is well known by mountain bikers and Karapoti Classic competitors, it is new rogaining territory. While all rogaines are tough, requiring teams to compete for 24 hours, the Moonshine 24 offers some extra challenges. As well as the typical NZ style steep terrain dotted with native bush and pines, there are a number of spectacular gorges and canyons dissecting the race area. Warm and enticing in the middle of a summer day, these may not be such an easy or fun proposition by moonlight. And having only been seen by a handful of people, they are also the must-visit feature of the Moonshine24. Visit www.moonshine24.co.nz for event information and registration.
